VIOGNIER 'CALYPSOS' MONTALBERA 2024 DESCRIPTION

Montalbera's Viognier 'Calypsos' is a Piedmontese wine that originates in the area between the Langhe and Monferrato, specifically in Castagnole Monferrato. The winery has been managed by the Morando family since 1980, who decided to invest in the expansion of some of the land they already owned, also planting new native vines. One of the special features of the area is that the vineyards are arranged in a circular shape around the green hills, so as to form an overall figure that is beautiful to the eye. The working philosophy has always been to respect nature and the fruits it gives us every day, limiting waste and using renewable energy sources that are not harmful to the ecosystem: the idea is to create an efficient circular economy within the winery, so that the impact is minimal and responsible.

Montalbera's 'Calypsos' Viognier vineyards are located in Castagnole Monferrato and cover about 6 hills entirely, sharing the land with the cultivation of the typical Piedmontese 'gentile' hazelnut. The plants are between 7 and 30 years old and the training system is low guyot. The climate is continental with hot, sultry and sunny summers for most of the time, while winters are cold, wet and often with sudden frosts at the end of winter; the soil is mainly calcareous and clayey for a final product with character and structure. Harvesting is carried out manually; in the cellar, vinification is by the white method with soft pressing of the marc; this is followed by maturation in steel tanks and a few months' rest in the bottle in a horizontal position.

To the eye, Montalbera's Viognier "Calypsos" is a crystalline straw yellow with brilliant reflections. The aromas are reminiscent of unripe yellow-fleshed fruit, wild flowers and mineral notes; on the palate it is soft, elegant and inviting with a harmonious structure and good final persistence for a curious drink. It pairs perfectly with shellfish, seafood and grilled fish dishes; also interesting with roasted white meats. Perfect for aperitifs by the sea in summer with lifelong friends to enjoy the most authentic nuances of the Piedmontese land that also knows how to offer excellent white wines.
