Ekfraseis winery is an interesting reality of the wine world, which was founded in 2013 near Chandria, in the Cypriot district of Limassol. It was created at the initiative of winemaker Christos Vassiliades, who wanted to carry out a very ambitious and courageous project. After completing his university studies in enology in Greece and the United States, he decided to start his own estate, with the aim of enhancing his land and the ancient tradition of Cyprus in the field of wine production. The estate is located in the heart of the highest mountain community in Cyprus, at the foot of the Madari Mountains, at an altitude of more than 4,000 meters above sea level. It is the winery with the highest vineyards in Europe and among the highest in the world.
In the Chandria area, viticulture has ancient origins, and vine culture has always been part of the local traditions and ancestral relationship with the land. This area, located in the foothills of the Madari mountain range, is characterized by a rocky landscape, but nevertheless very suitable for vine cultivation. The estate is located at an altitude of 4,200 meters and covers an area of 15 hectares, divided into numerous small plots located near the mountain villages of Chandria, Kyperounta, Chandria, Lagoudera and Saranti. Sixty percent of the vines grown are indigenous, particularly Mavro, Maratheftiko and Xynisteri. These are old vines about 70 years old, still bush-trained on often very steep slopes. The remaining 40 percent of the vineyards are planted with international varieties, which have adapted particularly well to these extreme situations: Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
The estate enjoys very special conditions; the mild climate of the altitude prolongs the vine's growing cycle, with harvests in the fall, during a cool period with large temperature fluctuations, which favors the development of intense aromas and the maintenance of high acidity. The stony, steep and very well-drained soils naturally contain yields, giving clusters with rich, concentrated aromas. The excellent quality grapes are vinified delicately and very carefully, so as to preserve their varietal notes and unique terroir characteristics. Christos Vassiliades' philosophy is to make the most of the face of this mountain viticulture, made in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. His wines are fresh, elegant, with fragrant fruit and intense depth of flavor.
