Pietro Selva's small and young winery is located in the heart of Valtellina, precisely in Castione Andevenno, a few kilometres west of the city of Sondrio, a unique place squeezed between the Alps of Upper Lombardy. Here, in 2010, Pietro picked up his father's farming heritage by starting his own artisanal wine cellar, driven by his love for his land, with its history and traditions, a heritage that the winemaker is keen to enhance. He began with only 6,000 m2, to which he added 9,000 m2 in rented premises, thus starting his micro-production. The very limited selection succeeds in condensing all the passion and the most authentic soul of Valtellina, without filters or sophistications, with Pietro personally taking care of all stages of the production process supported by his partner Elena.
There are just 1.5 hectares of vineyards cultivated by Pietro Selva, mainly dedicated to the grape variety that is the symbol of Valtellina: Chiavennasca, a biotype of Nebbiolo. In addition to this historic variety, Pietro raises small percentages of Pignola and Rossola, other traditional Valtellina grapes. The vines are located at an altitude of around 500 metres, on steep mountain slopes that have required terracing to make cultivation easier. The vines, surrounded by meadows and woods, enjoy the rocky and sandy soil matrix and the typical cool, sunny climate of the Rhaetian side of Valtellina. In order to preserve the inestimable environmental heritage of the area, Pietro adopts a highly sustainable viticulture, based on the principles of organic farming. Even in the cellar, the approach is absolutely genuine and all oenological operations are carried out without affecting or altering the beautiful expression of the Valtellina territory. Following this vision, fermentation takes place spontaneously and the use of additives and oenological aids is categorically excluded, except for minimal quantities of sulphur dioxide at bottling.
Pietro Selva's is a niche production that is able to tell the story of the Valtellina wine tradition in the simplest and most direct way, without, however, renouncing the fragrant elegance typical of the territory.
