FRICANDÒ IN ANFORA AL DI LÀ DEL FIUME 2022 DESCRIPTION

Fricandò from the biodynamic winery Al di là del fiume is one of the most surprising and interesting interpretations of the Albana grape variety. It is a full-bodied dry white wine rich in substance, produced with long maceration on the skins in Tuscan terracotta amphorae. The aim of Danila and Gabriele, owners of the winery and creators of an anthroposophically inspired educational and social agricultural project, is to produce wines like the ones people used to drink in the old days, made with very traditional methods, without the use of oenological additives.

Fricandò is made from Albana grapes grown on a 0.4-hectare plot within the Montesole Historical Park in Marzabotto, according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture, without the use of chemicals. The Albana grape variety, traditionally grown both in Romagna and in the Bologna area, is characterized by a very thick skin loaded with aromas and noble tannins, which is why it was traditionally vinified with maceration on the skins in order to increase aromatic extraction and produce a rich, structured white wine. The winemaker of Al di là del fiume, Adriano Zago, to enhance all the aromatic complexity typical of the grape operates a maceration on the skins that can last from two weeks to three months. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, without inoculation of yeasts or addition of additives, in Tuscan terracotta amphorae. To ensure proper shelf life of the wine, only a minimal dose of sulfur dioxide is added only at the bottling stage.

Fricandò presents itself in the glass in a very charming golden yellow guise. The olfactory spectrum is rich and very broad, with scents of honey, dried flowers, candied fruit and ripe autumn fruits, such as medlars, persimmons and yellow apples. The sip is involving, juicy and structured, enlivened by a nice sapidity and a very drinkable freshness. The finish is very long, marked by very fine tannins and pleasantly bitter herbaceous notes. This is undoubtedly an unconventional and unconventional white wine that seeks direct contact with the very ancient traditions of the territory.
