The Bolgheri Rosso Superiore ‘Ornellaia’ of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia's Vertical Kit is a Bordeaux blend, composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The grape harvest is carried out by hand and is preceded by numerous analyses and actual tastings of the berries, in order to best evaluate the degree of ripeness and the balance of the components. This allows for a first selection already in the vineyard, followed by a double sorting in the cellar. The grapes are vinified separately based on their cru of origin, in order to create the most expressive blend of ‘Ornellaia’. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, while malolactic fermentation mainly occurs inside oak barrels. After an initial aging of 12 months in barrels, the blend is created, then reintroduced into wood for further aging for about 6 months. Bottle aging requires another 12 months of patient waiting.
