MUFFATO 'CALCAIA' BARBERANI 2019 - 50CL DESCRIPTION

Muffato 'Calcaia' is a precious and complex dessert wine made by the Umbrian winery Barberani on the shores of Lake Corbara, an area characterized by a unique microclimate ideal for the development of noble rot. Behind this incredible transformation process lies the action of a fungus called Botrytis cinerea, which in particular atmospheric conditions marked by morning mists and breezy, sunny afternoons, manages to dehydrate the berry, concentrating the sugars and producing distinctive aromas. The launch of 'Calcaia' dates back to 1986, although Luigi Barberani began experimenting with wines produced through noble rot as early as the late 1970s.

Barberani Muffato 'Calcaia' comes from a blend of Grechetto and Procanico, varieties grown in the Lake Corbara area on soils of sedimentary and volcanic origin, characterized by abundant marine fossils, pebbles and limestone agglomerates. The vines, located between 200 and 300 meters above sea level, have an average age of 30 years and are cultivated on a certified organic regime supplemented by biodynamic practices. Harvesting is done by hand in five or six passes, selecting from time to time the clusters attacked by noble rot. After the grapes are pressed, the must is left to ferment by indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the same type of wine containers where the subsequent several-month maturation phase takes place.

Barberani's 'Calcaia' Muffato Orvieto Classico Superiore is bright golden yellow in colour. Elegant and enveloping, the aromatic bouquet is defined by distinctive scents of ripe fruit, candied fruit, white flowers, acacia honey and saffron. Persuasive, soft and harmonious taste, with a pleasant fresh-savory component that drives the sweet and persistent finish.
