Maison Guigal is a major player in the Rhône Valley, which, between its own vineyards, leased vineyards and the purchase of grapes from conferters, produces a wide range of wines ranging from the Côte-Rôtie to Condrieu, from Hermitage to Crozes-Hermitage, from Saint-Joseph to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. For no less than three generations, the Guigal family has managed a domaine known worldwide for the excellence of its wines. The vineyard is conducted with extreme care, with the aim of bringing out the potential of each individual parcel. The winery is located in Ampuis, in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie Appellation, one of the most prestigious areas in the northern part of the Vallée du Rhone. The Côte-Rôtie was already planted with vines at the time of the ancient Romans, and today it is the cradle of Syrah, which on the stony soils of the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, composed of schist, gives wines of extraordinary finesse and aromatic intensity.
The estate also has terraced vineyards overlooking the Rhone in the small but famous Condrieu appellation. On the granite soils, the white Viognier grape variety has settled in wonderfully and gives whites, rich, broad, with dense and persuasive fruity aromas. In the Saint Joseph area, Guigal produces excellent versions of Syrah and an interesting white made from the area's two historic varieties Marsanne and Rousanne. Of course, the winery also manages splendid vineyards on the legendary Hermitage hill, one of the mythical places of wine, and in the nearby Crozes-Hermitage Appellation. Finally, the domaine also extends into the most prestigious area of the Southern Rhône: Châteuneuf-du-Pape. On the alluvial soils composed of the galets roulés carried by the Rhone over the millennia, there are vineyards of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and the many other varietals set forth in the specification, which combine to create one of France's most fascinating and complex wines.
Maison Guigal is characterized by the presence of diverse terroirs, cultivated with many grape varieties, resulting in a varied collection of wines. However, what unites its activity is the scrupulous attention to the work in the vineyard and in the cellar. Agronomic management is carried out according to the principles of integrated pest management, with the utmost respect for the environment. Many plots are located on steep, sometimes terraced slopes and allow only manual work, from pruning to harvesting. In Ampuis' modern winery, careful and delicate vinification is carried out on a parcel-by-parcel basis to value all the nuances of the terroir.
